But what about the “real” haunted houses and buildings. Places that were the scenes of unexplained deaths, torture, and black magic rituals.

The Cecil Hotel - Los Angeles, CA
The home of serial killer Richard Ramirez, the Nightstalker, while he committed 13 murders, The Cecil Hotel’s infamy started way before that with several unexplained deaths. The most recent was that of Elisa Lam, her body found a rooftop water tank. Season 5 of the TV show American Horror Story is based on The Cecil Hotel.
Villisca Ax Murder House - Villisca, IA
In June of 1921, 8 people, including 6 children, were killed in this house by a blow to the head with an ax.
Lizzie Borden House - Fall River, MA
Speaking of axes, Lizzie Borden was accused of killing her father and stepmother with an ax in this house but acquitted. No one else was ever charged with the crime. You may have heard the rope-skipping tune about the crime, although the amount of “whacks” is inaccurate.

Sauer’s Castle - Kansas City, KS
A few deaths, including a suicide, and the general creepy, run down appearance of Sauer’s Castle have led to plenty of rumors that it’s haunted.
The Stanley Hotel - Estes Park, CO
The Stanley Hotel was Stephen King’s inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in his horror novel The Shining. Paranormal activity has been reported there since the early 1970s.
Amityville Horror House - Amityville, NY
Butch DeFeo shot his whole family while they slept in this home in 1974 claiming “The voices in the house made me do it.”. And crazy things have been happening there ever since leading to the popular book and movie.
The Sallie House - Atchison, KS
The Sallie House is known for cuts and burns experienced by people attempting to investigate paranormal activity in the house.
Waverly Hills Sanitorium - near Louisville, KY
Waverly Hills, a former tuberculosis hospital, closed in 1962. And there’s nothing creepier than an old, rundown, isolated hospital. Of course, there are rumors of it being haunted. And it was even featured on the TV show Ghost Hunters.
Monte Cristo Homestead - Junee, NSW, Australia
Reports of unexplained deaths and hauntings have resulted in Monte Cristo Homestead being called the most haunted house in Australia.
Ancient Ram Inn - Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, England
Stay in Britain's most haunted B&B, built on an ancient pagan burial ground. Apparently, guests have been so terrified there that they’ve jumped out windows!
Beechworth Asylum - Beechworth, Victoria, Australia
What is it about Victorian structures? Beechworth Asylum is another one that is rumored to be haunted. Even if it isn’t, the atmosphere there alone is said to chills up your spine.
